Analog Spectrum – Doug and Tony - are two Gen X 50-something guys who have managed to stay friends for around thirty years. They enjoy analyzing and debating entertainment, (pop) culture, and the general concepts of society through their unique, often retrospective, lens. They may know some things, but they don’t know a lot. They are doing this strictly for fun. The COAST GUARD (Part Four): Chapter One – Doug and Tony in Key West
WARNING: SPICY LANGUAGE AND OFFENSIVE CONTENT!The time has finally arrived! There was so much content that we had to make our Key West episode a two-parter. Things get informative, funny, and dark (as in dark humor) during this cast. If it makes any difference, this particular upload isn't too tasteless. Primarily, it dives into discussions about search and rescue and Alien Migrant Interdiction Operations (AMIO). Also, they crack the surface on how things went pear-shaped for those young and impressionable Coasties who ventured into the seedy side of the Conch Republic while making questionable decisions all along the way.

Doug and Tony thought the Raquel Welch (rest in peace, Ms. Welch) retrospective was a success – not that many people listened to it. It was just fun to do. It's against this background that they decided to do it again. This time it's all about John Cusack! The three movies they watched were Better off Dead, Grosse Pointe Blank, and Never Grow Old. Keeping to the format of the previous retrospective, they'll dive into each film a bit, discuss what's great and what's dreadful, and give it a thumbs up or down. And they discuss their outside-of-Hollywood/outside-of-acting opinions on Mr. Cusack. This one is all over the place in the best possible way.

The rules: Pick a movie the other hasn't seen, swap, watch, and discuss!
Doug's choice is Roger Dodger. This film features the unique and remarkable acting talents of Campbell Scott and Jesse Eisenberg. Next, Tony picked Cinderella Liberty, starring two film legends, James Caan and Marsha Mason. Spoiler alert for both films! As a matter of fact, if you haven't seen either of these (or neither of these), I'd recommend watching them before you listen to these two overanalyze these two movies. I promise it'll make the whole thing a TON better!

Doug and Tony will keep going to this well, and on the way there, they may beat a dead horse or two. The truth is, I think they both enjoy telling stories about their youth, and when they were young, they were in the Coast Guard. This podcast is a little Doug-centric. He joined a few years before Tony, and he had a few assignments under his belt before his casting-colleague even went to Boot Camp. Bottom line, we need to get our two intrepid heroes in the same place, so they can start telling their tall tales about the time they spent together in the Florida Keys. However, never fear! This episode is crammed full of chronicles about Coast Guard craziness – “A” schools, being underway, and saying dumb stuff to the wrong people. If you wanna know what it was like to be in a sea-going service before the world changed, then you need to listen to this!

Doug and Tony watched three movies –The Fantastic Voyage, Hannie Caulder, and Mother, Jugs and Speed – with only one thing in common, they all starred Raquel Welch (both our hosts are big fans of Ms. Welch). In this episode, they give their opinion of each film, comparing each movie to their podcast topic counterparts. They also debate who this actor was then and is now, what her movies meant at the time, and what they mean now. Also, they go down the rabbit hole of how things have changed for women in the film industry since the late sixties and early seventies. Are these changes good or bad or both? As usual, they start with an absurd idea and end up with some pretty intriguing conversation.

Try to remember WAY BACK to the podcast Hodgepodge Nùmero Dos! when the Analog Spectrum guys took a few minutes to read some lyrics and then tried to guess the song's title. It was so long ago, and we were so young! Also, it's a hell of a lot more challenging than it sounds! Anyway, that was just a tiny piece of a podcast. How cool would it be to have a whole episode dedicated to "Guess that Song"? Add to it, let's do songs from the early 80s! Everyone loves the 80's!! Even better, how about the wives join us? It just keeps getting better and better, doesn't it!?!? This one is equal parts funny and competitive, whatever the hell that means. Let the stupidity commence!
